Les Deux Salons

Where: Les Debentwood-news-bodyux Salons, Covent Garden

When: Wednesday 19th November

What: Classic French Brasserie

Menu: Pre theatre set 3-course menu for £20

Ambience:

Beautiful wood seating, crisp white table clothes and vintage French charm the service was quiet and attentive. The only downside was when the cheese board emerged from somewhere and the smell of sweaty feat perforated the air – aside from that sublime.

Drinks:

We had a choice of three cocktails and I chose a Negroni – not French –  one of my favourites which packed a punch, perhaps a tad too much Campari but still very quaffable. On request tap water was brought and replenished without interruption to the conversation.

Food:

Starter

The choice was caesar salad, soup or ham hock terrine. Me and my dining partner both chose the soup which was a pumpkin veloute with pumpkin seeds sprinkled on top The portion was extremely generous and the soup was silky warming and delicious – a shame I had had soup for lunch but I admit this one  was better than mine.

Main

Being our monthly steak date we chose steak, the 250g Flank Steak to be precise. We shared seasonal greens, sprouts and chips and it was served with a béarnaise sauce. I don’t think I’ve had this cut of meat before and I found it quite bizarre, like braising steak but rare on the inside and crispy on the outside. It was okay not overly meaty and robust in flavour, not my favourite – in fact the sprouts were my favourite, oh and the French mustard of course!

Dessert

Poached pear (gross – pears are like eating a gritty road), cheesecake or ice-cream – being the full children that we are the vanilla ice cream was selected which was brilliantly Mr Whippyish without the flake and sprinkles.

Overall – 6 out of 10 average food, company outstanding (well done Emma!)
